Trees
Complete any pruning that has not yet been done on a nice dry day. Spraying is critical at this time of year. Liquid copper helps prevent leaf curl, black spot and shot hole on your fruit trees. Spray pre bud burst and then 10 days later, or following rain. Codlin moth can also become a problem in September/ October – pheromone traps can be used now to indicate the presence of male moths. If detected spray with Yates Success Ultra which is derived from natural soil bacteria, or use Pyrethrum.
Vegetables
Get the garden ready, dig over, compost and add sheep pallets. Plant peas, broadbeans, carrots, spinach, silverbeet, and brassicas outside now. Inside in trays start sowing tomatoes, chilies and capsicum as it is still too cold outside for germination. Start sprouting new season seed potatoes ready for planting in September.
Hedges
Regular light pruning is more beneficial than heavy cutting. This causes less stress on the plants and helps to develop denser foliage.
Strawberries
Plant in fertile, free draining soil with full sun. Plant 30cm apart and mulch with pea straw or jute matting. This helps to keep the berries clean and suppresses weeds. Feed with Tui Strawberry Food.
