December Summer Gardening Advice
Get Gardening
A summer check list for your garden!
Vegetables
Apply mulch to bare soil to conserve moisture. Summer is a time for maintaining plant growth rather than planting more. Lettuce can be planted at this time of year but try to plant in areas with afternoon shade to prevent them ‘bolting’. It is time to dig out new potatoes ready for Christmas. Check any garlic bulbs you may have planted. Vegetables will need to be watered at least three times a week. Regular picking of beans, peas and tomatoes will encourage healthy growth.
Herbs
Herbs are great to plant at this time of year but like previously mentioned for lettuces make sure to plant in areas with afternoon shade to prevent them ‘bolting’.
Indoor Plants
If you are leaving your plants while on holiday it is important, they are not left to drown in water or to dry out. Most plants will make it a week or so without being watered if moved out of direct sunlight. Putting indoor plants in the bath on top of a wet towel is a good way the ensure they will not dry out.
Flowers
Now’s a great time to plant some summer colour try alyssum, petunia, salvia, verbena or marigolds. Marigolds are great companions for your vegetable’s plants. Fuchsia and Impatiens can also be planted in shaded areas. Any winter/spring flowering shrubs can be trimmed back once they have finished flowering to encourage new growth.
