Trees
Winter is the ideal time for planting trees. The soil is moist and then trees are dormant, this means less stress to them. Dig a hole twice the size of the container that your tree is currently in. Make sure to fork the base of the hole to loosen the soil. Position the tree in the centre along with a sturdy stake, if needed. Mix a bag of compost in to the soil to fill in the hole. It’s important to water immediately to ensure the soil settles around the roots. Feeds with sheep pellets or Tui Novatec fertiliser when new growth appears. Stake and tie large tree, especially in windy positions.
Fruit Trees
Winter maintenance through pruning can help keep trees to a manageable size. It also helps keep them free from disease and pests. Pruning can allow for more light to get into the tree, this helps the ripening and development of fruit, which can make for easier picking. Pruning should always be done on a fine day and followed up with a spray of copper to help seal cuts and prevent fungal infection.
Small Fruits
It’s good to plant now for summer fruit.
