Vegetables
Dig over the garden ready for spring planting, making sure to add compost and sheep pellets. If you haven't already done so, dig in green crops such as mustard and lupins. Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower planted early should mature before the white butterfly becomes a problem (but if it does make sure to grab some insert product here). Tomatoes, capsicum and chilies need feeding from the signs of first flowers, this helps avoid leaf production at the expense of the flower development. If you haven’t already done so sprout seed potatoes for planting once risk of frost has gone. It’s a good idea to plant root crops together in the garden as they require less nitrogen than leafy crops.
Flowers
Plant annuals, herbs and perennials to encourage bees into your garden. Marigolds, Salvia, Alyssum and Lavender are all good options. Flowering trees and shrubs like camellias, Kowhai and magnolia are great at attracting native birds like Tui, Wax Eye and Fantails. Keep deadheading late winter/early spring flowering annuals and give them a feed with liquid food.
Lawn Care
New lawns can be sowed this month. For existing lawns top dress with a slow-release lawn fertiliser. Spray with Turfix to eliminate broadleaf weeds and prickle weed killer for Onehunga.
Fruit
All pruning should now be done and trees bursting with spring growth. Cooper should be sprayed pre bud burst and repeated after 10 days. Pick the last of your citrus crops or if planting new citrus trees – now the time. Get your strawberries planted if you haven’t already.
